今天很開心，因為同事要spring for my coffee and bagel [ˈbeɪɡl] (面包圈).

昨天是加拿大勞動節 Labour Day，和周末連在一起休息了三天。在加拿大一般把和周末連在一起的假日稱作long weekend (長周末)。

長周末過後，今天第一天上班。lunchtime時和同事一起去買午餐，我要了一杯咖啡和一個bagel. 正當我要付費時，同事說：I'm happy to spring for your coffee and bagel.

我一下沒有明白，同事解釋說: She will pay for my lunch. "spring for" is an informal statement. If someone says "I will spring for it". They mean "I will pay for it," usually when buying meals or drinks for a group of people.

原來spring for 的意思是 pay for sth for sb else （替别人）付…賬/錢，請客。例如：

1. I'll spring for the drinks tonight. 今晚的飲料我來付賬。
2. Good idea! I'll spring for the meal. 好主意！這頓飯我請客。
3. He indicated he would spring for our dinner. 他說他要請我們吃飯。

English is really crazy. 一個詞竟有這麼多意思。spring常見的意思有：春天，春季，彈簧，發條，彈性，彈力； v. 跳躍，蹦等。

下面這個例句是我在加拿大編寫的一套英語教材上看到的。有個人在多倫多找房子租，對看的房子很滿意，但是牆上的油漆有些shabby (破舊的)了，于是問房東可不可以把牆刷一下。房東說："我付油漆錢，你自己刷吧。不過，你得選中性的顔色" 。我把音頻放到下面，感興趣的朋友們可以聽聽完整音頻，注意最後幾句話：

Look, I’ll spring for the paint if you want to repaint the place yourself but only if you choose neutral, not wild, colours!

下次付款時，如果有人跟你說"I will spring for it," 莫猶豫，直接說“Awesome! Many thanks”就OK啦！
