Many people tend to associate the sun god with Apollo, yet Apollo was generally known as the son of Zeus and Leto. In contrast, the parents of Helios were the Titans Hyperion and Theia, siblings(兄弟姐妹) of Cronus or Zeus’ father.
提到太陽神,很多人會聯想到阿波羅,然而大家都知道,阿波羅是宙斯和勒托的兒子,而赫利俄斯的父母是提坦巨人許珀裡翁和忒伊亞,宙斯的父親克羅諾斯的手足。
赫利俄斯
Therefore, Helios existed much earlier than Apollo, and the word Helios actually has the same meaning with the Latin word sol, which indicates the sun itself.
換言之,赫利俄斯的存在要比阿波羅早得多。事實上,赫利俄斯和拉丁語中的sol是同一個意思,即太陽本身
The word Solar, the adjective form, can be used to form such useful phrases(詞彙) as the solar system, the solar calendar, the solar terms, solar eclipse, solar energy, and so on.
其形容詞solar可以用來構成很多有用的詞彙,比如the solar system(太陽系)、the solar calendar(陽曆)、the solar terms(節氣)、solar eclipse(日食)和solar energy(太陽能)等。
Clytie(克呂提厄)
Clytie, an Oceanid or a water nymph(女神), loved the sun god Helios very much but was eventually deserted.
水澤仙女克呂提厄深愛着太陽神赫利俄斯,然而最終卻被後者所抛棄。
Myth has it that Clytie lay herself naked for nine days on the rocks without eating or drinking anything, simply staring at the sun with her hands outstretched(伸開的) towards the sky.
傳說克呂提厄全身赤裸地躺在岩石上,雙手伸向天空,目光凝視着太陽,就這樣不吃不喝地堅持了九天九夜。
The gods were moved at the pathetic sight, and transformed her into a flower, which turns towards the direction of the sun.
諸神被她的悲情所打動,于是在第九天把她變成了一朵始終朝向太陽的花。
The flower’s name is either heliotrope(向陽植物) or turnsole, both easily understood as the former has the word “Helios” in it and the latter, the “Sol”.
這朵花的名字既可以是heliotrope,也可以是turnsole,因為前者包含了“赫利俄斯(Helios)”的名字,而後者包含了“太陽(Sol)”。
