四、是否是分詞形容詞
Afraid 之所以不同的另外一個原因是，它不是分詞形容詞，而 scared 和 frightened，類似的還有 terrified，horrified，petrified 和 spooked 等是分詞形容詞，它們都是對應動詞的過去分詞，也就是我們常說的以 -ed 結尾的。
1. 通常過去分詞（以 -ed 結尾）用來談論某人的感受，例如：
He is always frightened by ghost stories.
他總是被鬼故事吓壞。
Sally is terrified of cockroaches.
莎莉害怕蟑螂。
I am scared to talk loudly in public.
我害怕在公共場合大聲說話。
2. 而現在分詞（以-ing結尾）用來談論引起這種感覺的人、事或情況等，例如：
I just watched a frightening movie, and now I can't sleep.
我剛看了一部恐怖電影，現在睡不着。
Jackie touched a terrifying cat under the dinner table.
傑基摸着餐桌下一隻可怕的貓。
3. 需要注意的是，scaring 不是分詞形容詞，通常用 scary 來代替，例如：
I think prison is going to be a scary thing for Nathan.
