The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. when the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

語法詳解：

動詞短語賓語的位置

及物動詞詞組的賓語若是名詞可以放在句子中間也可以放在句子末尾，若是代詞隻能放句子中間；

不及物動詞詞組的賓語無論是名詞還是代詞隻能放在句子末尾；

過去進行時：

表示過去某時或某階段正在進行的事

過去進行時經常用于when、while與as引導的時間狀語從句中，交代主句發生的時間。

late遲到

punctual準時（西方比較看重時間，和西方人打交道一定要準時；當被邀請到家中吃飯，一定要遲到5-10分鐘）

國家一般前面不加冠詞，寫全稱時要加the

3. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.

tell the police報警（不強調報警的方式）

that引導賓語從句，作tell的第二個賓語

try to do努力去做某事，想法設法做成功

try doing試着做某事，不行就放棄

4. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.

some作主語，是代詞，of the detectives修飾some

while表示而，是并列連詞，常出現在句子中間前後句子要時态要保持一緻；while=whereas

5. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House.

6. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel.

while位于句首時，一般表示"當….時候"，句子前後時态可以不一緻

keep guard保持警戒

the other表示兩個中間的一個，另一個；one….，the other….，一個，另一個

another表示三個以上的東西中的另外一個

others 代詞，常用于some….（the）others結構：一些，另外一些；

other 其他的，常作形容詞；some other其他的一些人

other than而不是….

7. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

to one`s surprise讓某人驚訝

to one`s excitement讓某人興奮

to one`s sadness讓某人悲傷

to one`s gladness讓某人高興

be full of裝滿，充滿（抽象的看不見的東西也可以，比如充滿空氣）

be filled with=be full of
