However這個詞是大家在寫作文的時候最常見的轉折詞，但是在教學中卻發現很多同學however的用法簡直是千奇百怪。However做轉折通常有三種用法

1.放在句首

Your speech is so convincing. However, my father doesn't buy it.

2.放在句中，當插入語 (放在主語與謂語之間，建議使用這個形式)

Your speech is so convincing. My father, however, doesn't buy it.

3.放在句尾

Your speech is so convincing. My father doesn't buy it, however.

4.注意：但是絕對不能和but對換，but是連詞，可以連接句子，而however 是副詞，可做插入語。（有關插入語的内容請參考鍊接 英語“插入語”詳解）

Your speech is so convincing，but my father doesn't buy it.

Your speech is so convincing，however my father doesn't buy it. 這句就是錯的

Your speech is so convincing，however， my father doesn't buy it. 有些同學認為寫成插入語的形式就對了，但是這句話是錯的。

其實大家可以發現無論however放前，放中還是放後都是和前一句的轉折。

我們知道although與though是不與but連用的，但although與though可以同yet, still, nevertheless, nonetheless 等連接副詞（當然yet還可以是連詞）連用。

那麼although 或though 可以同however 連用嗎？

有些老師會說這兩個詞是不能連用的，但是實際是可以的。應該指出，語義上同but差不多的however或nevertheless等卻不是連詞而是副詞，因此，它可以放在句首或句中，後面可以有停頓，書面上可以前後加逗号，而且可以與although/though相對連用。

用了although/though就不能用連詞but，但是可以用副詞however。

由于however是副詞，這就決定了使用時的一些規則：

（1）如果前面用了although/though從句，主從句之間用逗号分開，however可以就在逗号後面，再加逗号，然後是主句；或者however可以插在主句當中，前後逗号。

例如：

Although this month seemed to be a very quiet month, however, there were a number of activities that had far-reaching consequences. 或

Although this month seemed to be a very quiet month, there were, however, a number of activities that had far-reaching consequences.

（2）如果前面不用although/though，原來的原因從句就變成了獨立句，此時它同後一句之間要用分号（；）隔開。後一句的however，也是既可以放在句首，後加逗号，也可以插在句中，前後逗号。

例如：

This month seemed to be a very quiet month; however, there were a number of activities that had far-reaching consequences. 或

This month seemed to be a very quiet month; there were, however, a number of activities that had far-reaching consequences.

（3）如果幹脆不用however而用but，則兩個句子成了一個并列句的兩個分句，彼此之間不用分号隔開，而用逗号（但是用分号也可以）：

This month seemed to be a very quiet month, but there were a number of activities that had far-reaching consequences.

以上的例句表明although和though是可以同however連用的，注意其中的标點符号。
