一、and連接兩個相同的名詞主要表示兩個意思：

1.是表示“許多”。如：

I’ve known her for years and years.

我認識她好多年了。

They had worked together for months and months.

他們一起工作了好幾個月。

We saw flowers and flowers and flowers on the hill.

我們看到滿山遍野的鮮花。（nd連接三個及其以上相同的複數名詞，表示數量之多，到處都是。）

There are people and people and people in the streets on holidays.

假日街上到處都是人。（nd連接三個及其以上相同的複數名詞，表示數量之多，到處都是。）

They talked for hours and hours. 他們談了很長很長時間。

The road went on for miles and miles. 這條路很長很長。

2.是強調差别，意為“與……不同（不一樣，有差别）”。如：

Don’t worry—there are rules and rules. 别擔心——規則跟規則不一樣。

I like city life but there are cities and cities. 我喜歡城市生活，但城市之間也有差别。

There are books and books.

書有種種，好壞不一。

There is meat and meat.

肉有優劣。

3. and可以表強調：

The people and the people alone，are the motive force in the making of history.

人民，隻有人民，才是創造曆史的動力。

另外. 當由and連接的兩個并列主語前面有each，every， no修飾時，謂語動詞用單數形式。

Every boy and (every) girl likes the puppy. 每個男孩女孩都喜歡這隻小狗。

No desk and (no) chair was seen in the room. 房間裡不見桌椅。

二、and連接兩個相同的動詞主要表示反複或連續、接連

He tried and tried but without success.

他反複嘗試，但沒有成功。

The baby laughed and laughed. 這個嬰兒笑呀，笑個不停。

He coughed and coughed. 他咳個不停。

兩次使用and連接相同的動詞，表示強調連續或更加重複：

He talked and talked and talked.

他談了又談。

三、and連接兩個相同的形容詞或副詞的比較級主要表示：越來越

The pain got worse and worse.

疼痛越來越厲害了。

Learning becomes more and more difficult as we get older.

随着年齡增長，學習變得越來越難。

She looked at me and cried harder and harder.

她看着我，哭得越來越厲害。

The weather is getting colder and colder. 天氣越來越冷了。Your English is getting better and better. 你的英語越來越好了。

She found the job less and less attractive. 她發覺那工作越來越缺乏吸引力。He played the piano less and less as he grew older. 他随着年齡的增長,彈鋼琴的次數越來越少了。There seems to be less and less time between each birthday and the next. 年年過生日,間隔的時間好像越來越短了。

四、and連接兩個相同的數詞主要表示加；加上

5 and 5 makes 10.

5加5等于10。

五、 當連接兩個相同的副詞時,以下兩種用法值得注意:　　(1) 表示動作的反複或連續,如on and on,over and over,again and again等。　　He kept moaning on and on. 他呻吟不已。

They talked on and on very happily. 他們很高興地談了又談。

He knocked at the door again and again: there was no answer. 他一再敲門,但無人應答。　　The car skidded off the road and rolled over and over down the slope. 汽車滑出路面,打着滾翻下坡去了。　　(2) 有時構成習語,有其特定的意思,如by and by(不久,馬上)、through and through(完全,徹底)等。　　They’ll be arriving by and by. 他們馬上就要到達。

　　My mother is Irish through and through. 我母親是地地道道的愛爾蘭人。
