前面我們講過hardly和scarcely的基本用法，兩者都是副詞，屬于半否定式。在普通的寫作當中一般把hardly和scarcely完全看作是同義詞，但也稍有區别，現就其區别及考點進行讨論。

hardly意思是“幾乎不，簡直不”，着重指困難，一般用來指程度，因此它常常用于修飾表示能力的詞。比如：I can hardly know what to say.我簡直不知說什麼好。We can hardly believe that.我們簡直不能相信那件事。

scarcely意思是“幾乎沒有，簡直不”，着重于不足，一般指數量，因此它後邊經常和enough、 sufficient等一些詞連用。比如：There were scarcely enough food for them at that time.那個時候他們幾乎沒有充足的食物。The bus was so crowded that there was scarcely sufficient room for us.電車上十分擁擠，幾乎沒有我們立足之地。She spoke scarcely a word of English，它幾乎一個英語單詞也沒有講。

Hardly scarcely兩個詞的共同點是：後面都可以同when（before）搭配使用，表示“剛……就”，同時，主句中的主謂有部分颠倒現象。比如：

Hardly had I reached the station when (before) the train started.我剛到車站，火車就開了。Scarcely had he opened the door when (before) a gust of wind blew the candle out.他剛開門，一陣風把蠟燭吹滅了。

下面看兩道有關hardly和scarcely的考題。

1. Hardly ______when the girl ran toward it.

A. had the plane landed B. did the plane land

C. the plane had landed D. the plane landed

這個題幹的意思是：飛機剛落地，女孩就跑過去了。我們都知道hardly和when搭配使用，但題中副詞hardly位于句首，那麼主句需要部分倒裝，也就是将謂語動詞的一部分放在主語前面。我們也知道，hardly…when中，when的後面用過去時的話，主句多用過去完成時，因此，選項中隻有A選項用了had landed，而且had放在了主語the plane的前面，A選項為正确選項。

2. She _______the piece into her mouth when she fell down dead upon the ground.

A. scarcely had put B. had scarcely put

C. had put scarcely D. has scarcely put

這個題的題幹意思是：她剛把那塊蘋果放進嘴裡，就倒在地上死了。從題幹和選項可以看出這個題是在考scarcely …when的正确使用問題。從時态的使用上講，scarcely …when中應該是主句用過去完成時，從句用一般過去時，那麼，選項A、B、C都是符合的。但三個選項中，scarcely的位置不同。根據其搭配的習慣使用判斷，scarcely多放在過去完成時的兩詞之間，也就是had scarcely put，因此，選項B正确。
