1.eggplant 茄子

The eggplant (also called an aubergine in UK) got its name back in 18th century Europe from the farmers who grew them, because some varieties of eggplant actually look like off-white/yellowish goose eggs.

2.kiwi 奇異果

kiwifruit is native to north-central and eastern China. The first recorded description of the kiwifruit dates back to the 12th century China during the Song dynasty.

Kiwi Fruit，一般來說就是我們常見的猕猴桃，培植曆史悠久；而奇異果是猕猴桃的一個人工選育品種，久而久之便也成了猕猴桃的代名詞啦！

那麼Kiwi 是什麼意思呢？其實，這本來是新西蘭對幾維鳥的稱呼。幾維鳥的叫聲很像“kiwi、kiwi”，是新西蘭特有的珍稀物種，被他們視為國鳥。但幾維鳥因為翅膀退化，不能飛行；雙腿反而粗壯有力，非常适合快速奔跑。

那麼一隻鳥和一個水果怎麼是同一個名字呢？有人說，因為幾維鳥毛茸茸的很像猕猴桃啊！拿這張惡搞的圖片來看，還真的有點像呢：

但實際上，故事是這樣的：

原産自中國的猕猴桃在古代經常被當做“野果”，在李時珍的《本草綱目》中寫道，因為猕猴喜食，所以被稱為猕猴桃。

後來它被一個新西蘭人帶到了自己的國家，竟然長勢喜人，結出的果子香甜多汁，所以被廣泛種植；在将猕猴桃出口到美國時，大家要想一個好聽好記的名字，還要考慮到瓜果關稅的因素——

所以猕猴桃就有了 kiwi fruit 這個非常富有新西蘭特色的名字啦！而奇異果便是這個名詞的音譯。

3.winter melon 冬瓜

冬瓜的原産地就在中國南部以及印度，所以在傳入西方的時候，就有了很多種譯法。有的是直接将“冬瓜”這兩個字翻譯 winter melon（在美國的農貿市場上，你一說人家就懂得），還有wax gourd（有着蠟一樣表面的葫蘆狀的瓜），以及學名：Benincasa hispida.

Winter melon, or Benincasa hispida, is a large Asian fruit that can grow beyond one foot long and weigh over 40 pounds. It resembles a large watermelon with its oblong shape and dark-green, waxy skin.

冬瓜，學術名稱為Benincasa hispida，是一種大型的亞洲植物，可以長到一英尺（約30厘米）長，重超過40磅（約18公斤）。它就像一個大的西瓜，長着橢圓形的形狀和深綠色的蠟狀皮膚。

Inside the flesh and seeds are white. Its name probably comes from the fact that while grown during the summer and autumn, it can be stored and eaten during the winter months.It is used in the making of a soup in China, often containing vegetables and pork and served in an intricately carved melon shell.

它的名字可能來源于這樣一個事實：冬瓜在夏季和秋季生長，而在冬季可以儲存和食用。在中國，它經常被用來制作冬瓜湯，這種湯中會有蔬菜和豬肉，并被盛在一個雕刻精美的冬瓜外殼中食用。

4.Daisy 雛菊

Daisy was called "day's eye". A beautiful and apt name for this little flower. They took note of how at sunset the flower closed its petals over its yellow centre, its "eye", to unfold them again at dawn, as if it were re-opening the eye. Appearing to them, refreshed after what seemed a good night's sleep, the flower prompted them to describe someone who enjoyed a good rest as feeling "as fresh as a daisy".

雛菊被稱為“Daisy”是從古英國開始的，他們描述這種美麗的小花是"day's eye"（日之眼）——因為它們發現，雛菊在日落時分會閉上它們的花瓣，在太陽升起時才會打開，像極了一個人在睡飽了之後緩緩睜開雙眼。
