• "風雅"一詞來自《詩經》，本是依據體裁與音樂對詩歌所分出的類型。"風（國風）"是周朝不同地區的音樂，大部分是民歌，由廣大勞動人民所創作的，體裁較為單一，讀起來朗朗上口。《風》包含160篇詩歌，分為周南、召南、邶風、鄘風、衛風、王風、鄭風、齊風、魏風、唐風、秦風、陳風、桧風、曹風、豳風15組詩歌。這部分内容貼近民衆生活，是《詩經》的核心。

• "雅"是宮廷宴請或朝會時的樂歌，用詞比較華麗，有的與政治有關，有的歌功頌德，有的針砭時弊，蘊意深刻，分為"大雅"與"小雅"，大部分是貴族文人的作品。《大雅》31篇為西周時期的作品，多為上層貴族所作，表達了對政治局勢的見解，含義深遠，所以謂之"大"。《小雅》中的47篇詩歌中少數出自于東周時期，由朝廷中的上層貴族和一些底層人士所作。《小雅》中的詩歌除了歌頌朝廷的偉大功績外，也表達了對政治制度的不滿與怨憤。

• "頌"是宗廟祭祀用的舞曲歌辭，内容多是歌頌祖先的功業，由于需要搭配舞蹈要演奏，所以曲風較為柔和緩慢。《頌》由《周頌》、《魯頌》和《商頌》構成。

• "雅""頌"指雅正之音，而"國風"是民間樂歌，因此"風雅頌"既是《詩經》的體裁， 同時也有高雅純正的含義。"風雅" 一詞後來一般指典雅與高雅的事物。

• Court hymns (ya), divided into daya (major hymn) and xiaoya (minor hymn), are songs sung at court banquets or grand ceremonies. They are mostly the works by lettered noblemen.

• Eulogies (song) are ritual or sacrificial dance music and songs, most of which praise the achievements of ancestors.

• Court hymns and eulogies are highbrow [1] songs while ballads are lowbrow [2] ones. Therefore, ballads, court hymns, and eulogies not only refer to the styles of The Book of Songs but also classify the songs into highbrow and lowbrow categories. Later on fengya (風雅) generally referred to anything elegant.

1. Highbrow: If you say that a book or discussion is highbrow, you mean that it is intellectual, academic, and is often difficult to understand. 高深難懂的，高雅的，學術性的

2. Lowbrow: if you say that something is lowbrow, you mean that it is easy to understand or appreciate rather than intellectual and is therefore perhaps inferior. 淺薄的；庸俗的；格調低的
