A lot 可謂是家喻戶曉，能文能武，很多人用起來都能得心應手，但其實 a lot 來源于 lot，而且它的實際用法也不僅是 a lot，有的用法還常常超出我們的記憶邊界，如 a lot on my plate，它一定是“盤裡有很多”的意思嗎？

在大部分時候，lot 都是以比較正式的 a lot 出現，或者較為不正式的 lots 出現，當然最為正式的是 many 和 much 了。

其實 lots 就是 a lot，它們在句中可以作包括代詞、限定詞或副詞，而且經常出現在我們的日常生活中，如表感謝的 thanks a lot 等。

一、a lot 或 lots 作代詞，其中常考點之一是主謂一緻，因為 a lot 可以指代可數的和不可數的，所以謂語動詞會有所不同，例如：

She expected all her students to pass the exam, but a lot weren't able to make it.

她希望所有的學生都能通過考試，但很多人都沒能通過。

上句中的 a lot 指代 all her students 中的許多，因此謂語動詞用複數 weren't。

Would you like some more cake? There's a lot left.

你想再來點蛋糕嗎？還有很多。

上句中的 a lot 指的吃的蛋糕，是不可數名詞，因此 there be 中用單數 is，但是需要注意的是 cake 有時也可以作可數名詞，指的是形形色色的蛋糕或餅狀食物，此時謂語動詞用複數，例如：

A lot of these cakes are very easy and quick to make.

這些蛋糕中的許多制作起來既簡單又快捷。

二、a lot of 作限定詞，修飾可數名詞和不可數名詞，那麼同樣地主謂一緻是常考點

A lot of people are coming to the weekend workshop.

很多人要來參加周末的研讨會。

上句中的 a lot of 修飾可數名詞 people，因此謂語動詞用複數 are.

There's a lot of support from the government for this project.

這個項目得到了政府的大力支持。

上句中的 a lot of 修飾不可數名詞 support，因為謂語動詞用 is.

三、a lot 作副詞

a. 與形容詞或副詞連用，至于它們之前，意為“很，非常”，相當于作副詞的 much

He's feeling a lot better today after the operation.

手術後他今天感覺好多了。

b. 與動詞連用，至于它們之後，意為“非常”，例如：

Thanks a lot for your great support and care.

非常感謝您的大力支持和關心。

Considering he just finds his feet here, he knows quite a lot about the business.

考慮到他剛剛在這裡站穩腳跟，他對這項業務已經懂得不少了。

了解了 a lot 或 lots 的大概用法之後，你會發現 a lot on my plate 的字面意思确實是“我的盤裡也很多”，比如盤裡已經有很多飯了，不要再加了。

然而，a lot on my plate 還有其他的寓意，表示有很多的工作。這個習語起源于90年代的美國，是從餐廳到日常使用的短語之一。想象一下，晚餐時，盤子裡堆滿了你吃不下的食物時的情形就一目了然了。例如：

I don't think I'm able to make up the time this afternoon, because I've got a lot on my plate right now.

我想我今天下午的時間補不上了，因為我現在有很多事要做。
