英語裡的直接賓語簡稱賓語，是及物動詞短語中補充說明動詞，使動詞的意義完整的部分。
那麼，賓語有哪些功能呢？賓語可以表示：
（1）直接對象。
I found him at last. 我終于找到他了。
（2）使役對象。
She stood the child on her knees. 她讓孩子站在自己的膝蓋上。
（3）結果。
They built a new house. 他們建了一幢新房子。
（4）内容。
What did you say? 您說什麼？
（5）事件。
They did some shopping. 他們買東西了。
（6）目的。
They nodded their agreement. 他們點頭同意了。
（7）和對象有關的人或物。
Can you read Shakespeare? 你看得到莎士比亞的著作嗎？
（8）工具。
He pointed his gun at me. 他用槍對準我。
（9）終極。
We reached London at last. 我們最後到達了倫敦。
（10）處所。
The horse jumped the fences. 馬跳過了栅欄。
（11）量度。
The suitcase weighs 10 kilos. 箱子重10公斤。
（12）動作的執行者。
This hall seats 1000 people. 大廳能坐1000人。
（13）抽象的或含糊的意思。
I am afraid we will catch it. 恐怕我們要遇到麻煩。
（14）無具體意義。
We found it useless trying to persuade him to go with us. 我們發現，勸他和我們一起去是沒用的。
