一般過去時常表示在過去某一個特定的時間所發生的動作或存在的狀态，此時常和表示過去的特定的時間狀語連用。這些時間狀語有：yesterday, yesterday evening, last night, the night before last（前天晚上），last year, last spring（去年春天）以及three days/months/years ago等等。注意，這些時間狀語之前不需加介詞，比如不能說：at last night*，in last year*或in three years ago*等等。請看例句：

1. I saw him in the library yesterday morning.我昨天早上在圖書館看到他了。
2. I began to learn English ten years ago.我10年以前開始學習英語。
3. I bought this computer three years ago.我三年以前買的這台電腦。

以上例句是表示過去發生的動作。下面的例句是表示過去存在的狀态：

1. He was late for school this morning.他今天早上上學遲到了。
2. I was tired last night, so I went to bed early.我昨晚感到很累，所以早早地上床睡覺了。

上述例子均表示在過去某一特定的時間點（a specific point of time in the past）發生的動作或狀态，可以圖示為：



這種帶有确定的過去時間狀語的句子，我們都能夠正确地采用一般過去時來表達。但是很多時候句子裡沒有明确的過去時間，而要根據上下文的語境推斷出某個動作是過去發生的，這時也要用一般過去時。比如下文的作者在講述自己曾經的一次尴尬的經曆時，用了過去時态：

The local shopping mall sells everything from tires to tuna fish. I was there around noon and stopped at the lunch counter for a slice of pizza. I asked him what was wrong. He said, “I just purchased that trash can! ”
