感覺很久沒說俚語了，今天我們就來随便講幾個有趣的俚語小知識吧~小夥伴們見諒哈，昨天高考結束了，看了很多孩子開心的出考場，就讓我想到了曾經高考的自己，高考無非就是考試，test測驗，先說一個與這個有關的俚語吧！

1、Acid test

Acid英文釋義：a chemical substance that has a pH of less than 7. Strong acids can burn holes in material or damage your skin.

即是指pH值小于7的化學物質。強酸會在材料上燒出洞來或損傷皮膚.

test英文釋義： a set of questions, exercises, or practical activities to measure someone’s skill, ability, or knowledge.

即指測試某人的技能、能力或知識的一組問題、練習或實踐活動.

那Acid test是什麼意思呢？難道是上化學課時說的“酸性測試”，哈哈，當然沒有這麼簡單。

首先我們來看Acid test的原義：using nitric acid to do a test for gold.

即化學實驗中采用酸性液體測試金屬是否為金的方式。

而劍橋詞典給出的定義是：the true test of the value of something.

即引申意思可以理解為“關鍵性的測試、試金石”等。

The new party is doing better and better in the polls, but the acid test will be the next election .

這個新型政黨在民調中一路高漲，然而下屆選舉将會是真正的試金石。

The new iphone is amazing but will people buy it？That's the acid test.

新蘋果手機很贊，但是會有人買嗎？這才是真正的考驗。

2、keep up with the Joneses

這是我想說的第二個俚語，有一部美國電影，叫做 Keep up with the Joneses. 如果不知道這個俚語的意思，想必小夥伴們壓根都猜不到它講述的是個什麼故事。

keep up with 意思是 “跟上；趕上”。keep up with the Joneses 字面意思是 ：趕上瓊斯。它的真正意思是：跟有錢人比排場；攀比。

這個短語意思是怎麼來的呢？

這又是一個由作家創造的說法，這位作家是一個漫畫家。這位美籍漫畫家就是亞瑟·莫曼德 （Authur Momand）, 他在1913年開始創作連載漫畫，稱為 《跟瓊斯家比闊氣》（keep up with the Joneses）。

兩年後，同名動畫在院線上上映。Jones 在美國也是一個菜市場名字，而莫曼德則使用這個名字來比喻 “鄰居”。

“Keeping up with the Joneses”refers to the comparison to one's neighbor as a benchmark for social caste or the accumulation of material goods.

To fail to"keep up with the Joneses"is perceived as cultural inferiority.

cultural inferiority 文化自卑

inferiority 低等；劣等

With the high cost of living，it's getting tough to keep up with the Joneses.

生活支出越來越高，要跟别人比排場真的是越來越難了。

I don't worry about keep up with the Joneses. Our old car is still fine.

我不在意一定要跟别人比排場，我們的老車還很好開。
