吾日三省吾身，省得一事，驚出一身冷汗：昨日翻看菜單，碩大一個“粥”字下方的翻譯竟然不是porridge——作為認證吃貨，不能地道地向老外介紹中國美食乃一大折磨，遂制此推文，與衆吃貨探讨常見食材之翻譯。

1.Congee ['kɑndʒi]/ rice porridge 粥/稀飯

呼應前文，當時菜單上寫的譯名兒是Congee，那Congee和Porridge到底有啥不同呢？

Porridge is a dish made by boiling oatsor sometimes anothercerealin water, milk, or both. It is usually served in a bowl or dish.Congeeis a type ofrice porridgethat is eaten in many Asian countries.

所以Porridge是通過在水和牛奶中煮沸燕麥或其他谷物而形成的糊狀物，而Congee是一種在亞洲國家廣泛流行的用米做原料的粥。簡而言之，porridge是一個相對寬泛的概念，而congee，咱中國稀飯，粥，是屬于porridge的一種，專指米做的porridge。

2.Plain rice 白飯/淨米飯

plain作形容詞有樸實無華的意思，plain rice——樸實無華的米飯，就是啥都沒加，白白淨淨的一碗飯。

Also pay attention to the pronunciation of plain, it's not "plan", but "ein"-/plein/.

E.g. I want two bowls of plain rice, please.

我想要兩碗米飯，謝謝。

3.Preserved egg 皮蛋

皮蛋瘦肉粥~相信不少小夥伴都嘗過，下次給老外介紹粥裡邊兒那個黑亮黑亮的皮蛋，就不會再一臉懵逼啦~

4.Puff [pʌf] 酥皮點心

Just think about the pronunciation of the snacks——泡芙。聰明的小夥伴都猜到了，現在大街小巷随處可見的泡芙，就是Puff的漢化版啦。

E.g. The puff in China is traditionally a kind of dim-sum with a crispy coverage outside and sweet stuff inside.

中國傳統的酥皮點心一般外表酥脆，餡料香甜。

5.Edible bird's nests 燕窩

edible [ˈɛdəbl]:可食用的

這個edible可謂是點睛之筆，如果你隻說bird's nest，很可能把老外吓得出現以下情形：第一、什麼？樹上那一坨直接煮了？第二、excuse me, 北京的鳥巢你也能吃？Ok, so just do not omit edible.

E.g. Edible bird's nest was once served only to the rich people.

燕窩曾經一度隻供應給有錢人。
