In October 2017, astronomers(天文學家) in Hawaii(夏威夷) saw something surprising(令人驚訝的事情). A strange(奇怪的) object(物體) was moving through(穿過) the solar(太陽) system(系統). They had seen many asteroids(小行星) before, but this was something different. It was long and thin(細的)—like a cucumber(黃瓜). The object’s speed(速度) and direction(方向) also showed something surprising. This was an interstellar(星際)1 object—the first ever seen.
The object was named 'Oumuamua'—Hawaiian for "visitor(來訪者) from afar(遠方的)." Nobody is sure exactly(精确地) what it is. The simplest(最簡單的) idea is that 'Oumuamua' is a strangely shaped(形狀) piece of rock(岩石). Perhaps(可能) it was knocked out of a far-off(遙遠的) star(恒星) system. However, astronomers saw that its speed increased(增加) after passing the sun. Some scientists therefore(因此) suggest(提議) a different theory(理論).
'Oumuamua' could be a piece of alien(外星) technology(科技)〃 says Professor(教授) Abraham Loeb from Harvard(哈佛) University. Loeb believes this could explain(解釋) the object's long, thin shape, and also its change in speed. Maybe ‘Oumuamua' was a spaceship(宇宙飛船) that came to explore(探索) our solar system. "All possibilities(可能) should be considered(考慮到)," says Loeb.
'Oumuamua' can no longer(不再) be seen from Earth. But astronomers continue(繼續) to study the information they got from it. It is still not clear if the object was a large rock, or something else altogether. 'Oumuamua' will likely be a mystery(神秘的事物) for many years to come.
reading skill:
You scan a text when you want to find specific information. When you scan, you only look for the information you want. You don't read the rest of the text. For example, for the question What does 'Oumuamua' mean in Hawaiian?, look through the text for the words 'Oumuamua' and Hawaiian, and possibly quotation marks ("").
