be動詞的過去式是：was和were, 這兩種形式與現在式用法沒有多大區别，作謂語時用哪一種，還是由主語的人稱和數決定。如下表：

注意：含be動詞的一般疑問句回答用Yes或No. 其結構是：

4. There be句型：　　

there be句型是含有be動詞的一個重要句型。其結構如下：　　

there be動詞 名詞 地點狀語　　

There is a school there. 那裡有一個學校。　　

在這個句型中a school是真正的主語，be動詞的形式由它決定。當這個名詞是單數時，be動詞是is或was, 當這個名詞是複數時，be動詞用are或were。如：

There are many students in the classroom.

There was an accident in the street last night.
