☞by and large在上文中表示“總的來說，大體而言”。我們用by and large來指一些大體如此、但不完全正确的事情。近義詞組有：generally，more often than not，mostly。

☞at large還可以表示“大多數，一般”。不過與by and large不一樣的是，這個詞組強調的是大部分人的共性，不提個性。

The administration had several reasons for holding back.

政府因為幾個原因而猶豫不決。

☞hold back還可以表示“保留”。如果後面的賓語是secret/ something you don't want to tell，那麼就是“隐瞞”的意思；如果賓語是resources/ something you want to preserve，那麼就是“儲存、保護、囤積”的意思。我們來看兩個例句了解一下：
