英語中表示方位的東、西、南、北四個名詞是east, west, south和north。在使用時要注意以下幾點：

1. 在通常情況下，其前要加定冠詞。如：

It's a few kilometers to the east of London. 那是倫敦以東幾公裡的地方。

表示彼此接壤時，用介詞on或to均可以。如：

Korea lies on the east of China. 朝鮮位于中國的東邊。

另外，有時由于說話者的說話角度不一樣，所使用的介詞也可能不一樣。如：

Germany is bounded on the west by France and on the south by Switzerland. 德國西面與法國接壤，南與瑞士為鄰。

3. 當east, south, west, north用于名詞前作定語時，要注意它們與eastern, southern, western, northern的區别。下面以east與eastern的區别加以說明（其他幾組詞的區别與此類似）。

(1) 當談論模糊的、較不确定的地區時，一般多用eastern。如：

the eastern part of the county 該縣的東部

eastern side of the USA 美國的東部地區

而談論界線較清楚的地方時，則多用east。如：

(3) 在抽象名詞前，一般用eastern，不用east。如：

the eastern civilization 東方文明

the eastern languages 東方語言

eastern religions 東方宗教

4. 漢語中說“東南西北”或“東西南北”，但在英語中卻通常說成north, south, east and west（北、南、東、西）。如：

North, south, east and west are the four cardinal points of the compass. 東、西、南、北是羅盤上的四個方位基點。

It is colder in the north, warmer in the south, drier in the east and wetter in the west. 北方冷，南方熱，東方幹，西方濕。

有時也說north, east, south and west或north, east, west and south或east, west, north and south，但均不算普通。

注意以下各詞語，其方位習慣與漢語完全相反：northeast 東北 / southeast 東南 / northwest 西北 / southwest 西南
