英語中有不少因為冠詞的有無或缺失引起短語的意思不同，或者錯誤的短語，如 go to school 和 go to the school，go to the beach 和 go to beach 等，今天又遇到一對，go to the moives 和 go to a movie。

一般情況下，當我們要表示“去看電影”時，可以用“go to 電影院”來表示，如 go to the cinema 或 go to the movie theatre，其中 the cinema 和 the movie theatre 是看電影的地方，叫做電影院，那麼 go to 這些地方就隻能看電影了，例如：

我過去常在周末和朋友去看電影。

I used to go to the cinema with my friends at weekends.

I used to go to the movie theatre with my friends at weekends.

然而，要表達去看電影，我們還可以直接用 movie 這個單詞，那麼到底是 go to the movies 還是 go to a movie 呢，還是兩者都可以？

在電影制作之前隻有靜态圖片（still pictures），因此電影最初制作時，movie 被稱為 moving pictures，後來變成 motion pictures；随着語言的變化，習語和俚語的誕生，moving pictures 就變成了 the movies；因為 moving pictures 是複數的，所以短版的 the movies 也是複數的。

在電影使用的早期，人們通常用複數形式的 moving pictures 來指代一部電影，也就是指單個的 film 或 movie，所以當我們表達 watch a film/movie 時，其實是看一個 film 或 movie 裡面的所有 moving pictures 的，因此看電影還可以說成 watch a film/movie，例如：

Let's stay in and watch a film .

咱們待在家裡看電影吧。

由此可見，go to the movies 就是去看很多的 moving pictures，那就是很多的電影，這個跟 go to the cinema / the movie theater 的效果是一樣的，因為電影院有很多電影可以看，因此 go to the movies 中的 the movies 跟 the cinema 或 the movie theater 是類似的存在，例如：

How about going to the movies after the meeting?

會後去看電影怎麼樣？

Would you like to go to the movies with me sometime?

你願意什麼時候和我一起去看電影嗎？

那麼按這個思路去思考 go to a movie 的話，你會發現它也是正确的表達方式，就是去電影院随便看一部電影；如今人們去電影院隻看一部電影，因此可以說 go to a movie，例如：

When will we go to a movie? There are so many I want to see!

我們什麼時候去看電影？我想看的電影太多了！

Go to the movies 和 go to a movie 中的 movie 都表示包含了一系列 moving pictures 的電影或影片，因此在表達上是正确的，那麼 go to the movie 是否正确呢？

按照上面 movie 的定義，go to the movie 聽起來好像有一個特定的電影放映活動，但可能不是在電影院，這個跟 go to the movies 或 go to a movie 不一樣。

那麼總結一些就是，go to the movies 和 go to a movie 都正确，都是表示去看電影，但概念不同，前者的 the movies 是相當于 the cinema 或 the movie theater 地點的存在，而後者的 a movie 是指電影本身，但兩這個動作都是在電影院發生的，而 go to the movie 卻不一定是。

做”電影“解時，film，movie 和 picture 同意，但 picture 不常用，而且 the pictures 僅表示電影院，多用于英式英語。

定冠詞對于短語意思或結構的影響有些是定冠詞本身的限定作用，如 go to the school中的 the school 指特定的某所學校，但是 go to the movies 中的定冠詞卻沒有發揮定冠詞的限定作用，該短語更像是一個習慣用語。
