單詞quack有兩個常見意思,一指“嘎嘎”(鴨叫聲),是個拟聲詞,模仿鴨子的叫聲;另一個指“庸醫、江湖騙子”,是個縮略詞,在16世紀時寫作quacksalver,借自早期荷蘭語。
quacksalver意思是“庸醫”或“江湖醫生”,這些江湖郎中在沿街叫賣藥膏(salve)及“萬應藥”等假藥時,大吹大擂的樣子很像鴨子在嘎嘎叫(quack),所以被形象地稱為quacksalver。後來quacksalver被縮略為quack。
