單詞quack有兩個常見意思，一指“嘎嘎”（鴨叫聲），是個拟聲詞，模仿鴨子的叫聲；另一個指“庸醫、江湖騙子”，是個縮略詞，在16世紀時寫作quacksalver，借自早期荷蘭語。

quacksalver意思是“庸醫”或“江湖醫生”，這些江湖郎中在沿街叫賣藥膏(salve)及“萬應藥”等假藥時，大吹大擂的樣子很像鴨子在嘎嘎叫(quack)，所以被形象地稱為quacksalver。後來quacksalver被縮略為quack。
