fall over oneself to do sth

前幾天新學了一個詞組“Fall over oneself to do”，看書上給出的解釋是：特别賣力（做某事），多含貶義。帶着謹慎的态度，我查了Collins字典，解釋是：If you say that people are falling over themselves to do something, you mean that they are very enthusiastic about doing it, and often that you disapprove of this.

Ok，沒有問題，正是我學到的意思，例句：

Within days of his death those same people were falling over themselves to denounce him.

網上搜索“fall over onefelf to do”，多無負面含義

可在Cambridge dictionary中，這個詞組的解釋是：to be very eager to do something。例句

Publishers are falling over themselves to produce non-fiction for seven-year-olds.

僅僅如此，劍橋字典中并未提及那種貶義的感覺。這是為何？問了問身邊的老外，“fall over oneself to do”在英國英語中沒有貶義，純純就是“盡全力（做某事）”的意思。而在美國英語中則含有淡淡的貶義、批評含義。看來同一個詞組，美國英語，英國英語也會有細小差異，作為外語學習者，我們需要謹慎對待。

再說一個中國人容易說的中式英語

“加油”不能說成fighting（老生常談），也不能說成add oil（雖然字典中收錄了此詞，但老外還是不會知道）。如果使用fighting，可以說“keep fighting”、“don‘t give up the fight”，但二者說的是意義較大的事情，比如為某種理想奮鬥，keep fighting for equality、fight for your dream，但不可以說fighting for 100K followers on social media.
