北京大學外國語學院于1999年6月由英語語言文學系、東方學系、西方語言文學系、俄語語言文學系四個系組建而成。下設英語語言文學系、俄羅斯語言文學系、法語語言文學系、德語語言文學系、西班牙葡萄牙語言文學系、阿拉伯語言文化系、日本語言文化系、南亞學系、東南亞語言文化系、西亞語言文化系、朝鮮（韓國）語言文化系、亞非語言文學系、外國語言學及應用語言學研究所、世界文學研究所、翻譯碩士專業學位教育中心、語言中心，共計12個系2所2個中心； 擁有英語、俄語、法語、德語、西班牙語、葡萄牙語、日語、阿拉伯語、蒙古語、朝鮮語、越南語、泰國語、緬甸語、印尼語、菲律賓語、印地語、梵巴語、烏爾都語、波斯語、希伯來語20個本科語種專業。與元培學院、曆史系共建有外國語言與外國曆史專業；與元培學院、考古文博學院聯合開設外國語言與外國曆史專業-外國考古方向。
