a bit和a little都有“一點、少許”之意。兩進用作名詞時，不能直接跟名詞或代詞，而必須用介of連接。如：

Well, Mrs Green, may be he has caught a bit of cold.

There’s a little (=bit of) time left. 還剩一點兒時間。

She knows a bit (=little) of English. 她懂一點兒英語。

a bit 和a little也可用作副詞，後面跟形容詞或副詞。如：

The jacket is a bit (=little) large. 這件夾克有點大。

That’s a bit expensive. Can I try them on, please?

He ran a little faster than me.

他跑得比我快一點。

little 還可用作形容詞，表示“小的”、“幾乎沒有”。如：

a little girl（一個小姑娘）

a little water（有一點水）

注意：

not a little 和not a bit的意思完全不同，前者是“許多、很”，後者是“一點兒也不”、“毫不”。試對比：

It’s not a bit cold. 天一點兒也不冷。

It’s not a little cold.天很冷。 最後他們終于抓到了那個小偷。

a little, a bit 這兩個詞均表示“一點”之意，但用法不盡相同，首選，這兩個詞均可作程度副詞，修飾形容詞或副詞。但a little可直接修飾不可數名詞，而a bit則需在後面加介詞of才可修飾不可數名詞。例如：

This skirt is a little (a bit) large. 這條裙子有點兒大了。

Why not drink a little (a bit of) orange? 為什麼不喝點兒桔子汁呢？

另外：

not a bit 與not a little的意義恰恰相反，前者相當于not at all“一點也不”之意，後者則相當于quite“很、非常”之意，例如：

I’m not a little hungry. 我很餓

I’m not a bit hungry. 我一點也不餓

in spite of : 在這些詞中語氣最強，可與despite換用，口語或書面語中均可使用。如：

In spite of her hostility, she was attracted to him.

盡管自己心存敵意，她還是為他所吸引。

The blunt comment made Richard laugh in spite of himself.

這番率直的話讓理查德不由自主地大笑起來。

I wouldn't trust them in spite of all their la-di-da manners.

盡管他們處處顯得很高雅的樣子，我還是不相信他們。

notwithstanding : 語氣最弱，僅表示一種障礙的存在。如：

He despised William Pitt, notwithstanding the similar views they both held.

His relations with colleagues, differences of opinion notwithstanding, were unfailingly friendly.

盡管有意見分歧，他和同事們一直關系融洽。

Notwithstanding some major financial problems, the school has had a successful year.
